I do not have a fancy film camera or use great film, an old Nikon N6006 and Kodak BW400CN film are what I use, but I really do love shooting film. It helps me slow down my mind and really think about what I want to remember. These 22 exposures are from 2 rolls that I shot over the last year - the other 26 were duplicate/similar shots, out of focus, didn't develop correctly or just plain sucked. The first was taken November 9, 2009 and the last being taken just yesterday. When I grow up, I plan on having a fancy film camera and using great film. Until then, I'll keep doing what I do. All shots were taken with a 50mm f/1.8 or 28-75mm f/2.8.

A little about these shots - My friend Nancy debating if a tattoo was the right choice....Love that lady. A Santa Fe museum roof line on a cold winter day. Java Joe's tea selection, my milk and Marcus smiling and waiting for his breakfast.

The next 9 shots are from the Dia de los Muertos parade from Sunday. That Grandma was eyeballing me as I walked up on her right and swiveled her head as I walked by. She knew I was trying to get her pic and glared. Shot from my hip and kinda like what I got.

The last 8 shots are what I took to waste the film so I could see my DDLM shots and actually holds my favorite from the 2 rolls. The first of these was a mistake and is my favorite. The shots of the car and bicyclist was taken as I drove while sticking the camera out the window and snapping - the accidental angle makes it for me.

Extra Credit at Coronado State Monument

Marcus & I headed out Saturday morning for some extra credit for his NM History class at Coronado State Monument. It was a little chilly but was nice to be out and walking around with my camera....Haven't done that much lately. As we walked toward our first exhibit, we hear "Hi Marcus" being yelled from atop the kiva. I look over and three girls are waving at Marcus. He waves and we continue to walk to the first exhibit. Marcus takes some notes about the exhibit and says to me "You can stay here and take some pictures, I'm gonna go to the kiva." :)

We start with some detail shots of a traditional adobe hut and a conquistador's helmet. I want me a helmet like that. Next we have a pit firing from Ulysses Reid, potter from Zia Pueblo. It was cool to see the unveiling and how happy he was with the pieces. They were gorgeous and after cleaning will be a light to dark pumpkin color. The water jug in the first photo goes for about $480. Lastly is William ?, a blacksmith from Bernalillo. Here he is making a nail and some detail shots of his tools and workbench.

High Desert Rugby Classic

Yesterday we had a little time to waste so Julie, Marcus and I headed over to Bullhead park to watch some of the High Desert Rugby Classic. We had never seen any live so we thought it might be cool....We were pleasantly surprised - it was the coolest sport I have seen live. The hits were hard and the fact that we could sit up close was a plus. Wish now that we had stayed a little longer to watch a little more. Here are a few of the ones I liked.

My First Time

My first paid gig was on March 18, 2008. It was for Chris Sandoval, owner of Artisans Of The Desert. Chris is a local fine furniture designer and wood craftsman. He needed some images for a website for the business and I had been recommended to him by FosterMilo - the folks building the site.

As it was my first time shooting for money, I was kinda nervous. When I shoot for pay, I am expecting the client to demand a high quality product and I want to supply them that. I was in-and-out of there in less than 30 minutes and realized I worried for no reason - Chris was great and did everything as I asked of him. Since then, I have come to understand that when you are behind a camera you have control like no other time in your life....you can tell a person to move here or move there, tilt your this way or that way, smile a little less or a little more and they will do it.

I no longer get nervous but was a little frustrated on my last shoot when I thought my camera had malfunctioned and said the "F" word in church - with the priest standing behind me. Forgive me Father for I have sinned.

People I Didn't Know

About 6 months ago I had a dream that I found a Leica at the flea market for $7.00....every other month since then we have went in hopes of landing a shark. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything that caught my interest.

Today I did find a shoebox full of old photographs that immediately got my attention. There were some super cool images in the box of 60 or so and the owner wanted .50cents a piece. He took $8.00 for the whole box. I have collected old snapshots for a little while now but by far these are the best I have found.....Not sure who took some of these but I do love em - especially the portrait of the blonde lady looking out the window with great window light and the one of the gentleman and two ladies in wool coats.

Don't Laugh....My Ghetto Tabletop Studio

One of my favorite things to shoot is anything on my kitchen table - usually with a strobe hanging off the light above the table. I haven't shot anything on my table lately but it all came together when we had to stop at Walgreens and then Staples before we headed home. Julie bought me some beer and I picked up some white posterboard.

I have shot lots of things on that table and always use the same things - white posterboard or copy paper as the background and as reflectors and colored paper for a snoot. Below are a few shots of the set-up and the final shots. The first is the original with a little dodging to the corners and to the upper, middle part of the label. The second is the same shot but with some added space to give a better comp....easily done with the crop tool in Photoshop. Make sure your color is set to white and that the crop ratio is cleared, drag the crop to the ends of your image and then just keep going til you get the size you like, hit apply and you have a new canvas size.

I used 2 SB-600s (thanks Brian for the loaner, I will return it soon) - one directly above the subject about 3 feet up, zoomed to 50mm and fired via CLS at 1/2 power. The other was camera left and slightly behind the subject, zoomed to 50mm, fired via CLS at 1/40 power and loosely snooted with a piece of blue colored paper. I torn apart one piece of posterboard and placed the pieces to get a nice bounce from the 2 strobes.

It makes me pretty happy that I can make something look kinda nice with just some posterboard and paper.

The Walk Between Football Practice Pt.2

Julie and I walked around downtown this evening while Marcus had football practice....I am really happy how these came out. Most shot with my Sigma 10-20mm but also used my Nikon 18-70mm kit lens for the rest. We walked around for an hour and I took about 60 shots....These are some of my favorites. I am already looking forward to next Monday so Julie and I can go for another walk :)

Occifer....That Ain't My 1933 Ford

I was asked to shoot a sweet ride so I of course jumped at the chance....Bill, Julie & I arrived at the park and set things up. We had a few people come over and admire the car ask a few questions about the engine, etc....Then came the "douchebag" with the dog off the leash. He began to rant and rave about us driving the car on the grass - If he had just expressed his want of us moving the car off the grass we surely would have. But he became a little hostile and started to videotape us and take pictures of my license plate. He then proceeded to call the police - still with dog off the leash witch is illegal....Did I mention that there are car shows on that grass all the time. This is already longer than I wanted it to be but to shorten it the police showed up the "douchebag" met em in the parking lot and they talked for a few seconds and the police officer drove away. Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be douchebags....No grass was harmed in the making of these photographs.

Matanza....Wasn't That In January

It was but I never really got around to posting any of the images due to the fact that they were pretty graphic....It is the butchering, cooking and enjoying of a pig. For a while there I was rethinking my love for pork and then I remembered where BACON comes from and no longer gave a fuck. Thanks to our good friends Josette & Scott for the invite - I hope to do it again next year.

Villanueva, New Mexico

Spent the afternoon in Villanueva, New Mexico....most of the time was spent at Villanueva State Park - only had a few minutes to spend driving through town. I have been twice and still haven't nearly had enough time to look around as much as I wish - seems to be lots of cool places to shoot. First shot is an old tractor right outside the State Park, the second is Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and the last is of the Pecos River from the bridge located inside the park.

The Walk Between Football Practice

Julie & I took a walk near the Rio Grande Nature Center while Marcus was at football practice on Monday. It wasn't too hot, the company was great and there were plenty of interesting things for me to look at and photograph. The first shot of the tree limbs was duplicated, flipped and merged in CS5....The last one is very simple and somewhat plain and odd but Julie & I really dig it.

My Son, My Dad & My Daughter

I love him so much....he is smart, handsome, athletic, courageous, polite, kind, funny, confident and stubborn....all those things make him who he is and I wouldn't want him to change any of them. I love you Marcus.

1. My Dad was a postman for 33 years and worked at the same office the entire time from 1953 - 1986 (4th. & Candelaria). 2. He was given an award by the mayor for saving a man from a burning home while on duty (1963). 3.Taking Andrew, my little brother, for his first haircut at his best friend Joe's house (1986). 4. With Martin, Lisa, Lynn and Tina....(1969). 5. Family portrait session by Olan Mills (1983). 6. My Mom & Dad (1958). 7. Korean War MP (1951).

There is no plan on having more children so Indie will be our last....She is our daughter and we have become so attached to her in the last 3 1/2 years. She is smart, loyal, a great watchdog and is very pretty :) I would not want any other dog in the world.

How I love you so....Wish I would shoot you more. And Yes - I still look at the non-existent LCD on the back of the camera from time to time. All of these were shot using a Nikon N6006 and Kodak BW400CN film - except the lovely blue sky and monkey bars shot - Kodak 400 and a Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim. Still have a 1/2 roll in the N6006 - not even sure what is on the first half.....Only one way to find out :)

Things That Move You

I love photographing anything that moves you from one place to another- always have....Don't ask why - I'm Weird. They could be brand spanking new or broken down pieces of rusty goodness - it doesn't matter. These are some of my favorite photos of modes of transportation. What I Wanted To Be When I Was Younger....and What I Still Sometimes Want To Be

On Saturday, Julie, Grammy, Marcus and I went to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. "Abstractions" was the exhibit currently being shown. As we wondered around, Marcus expressed to me that he wants "flowers to look like flowers and pears to look like pears" - I thought to myself that I couldn't think any more differently. I do not want my pears looking like pears or my flowers looking like flowers and I especially do not want my buildings looking like buildings. I became involved with photography indirectly through Architecture. The photographs in the books I read were too gorgeous to forget - I had to find out how to make something look so alive and I am still trying to figure that out but having a great time trying....Straight lines and square windows are for losers.

Valley High School Baseball

Recently I volunteered for my nephew's baseball team taking team, individual and action shots of the Valley High School Varsity, JV and Sophomore Baseball teams. Because of the bad winds the individuals had to be done inside the dugout or along the dugout wall. I used two SB-600s bounced off white umbrellas. One camera right at 45 degrees and the other camera left directly to the side of the subject. It was time intensive but I had a great time shooting the teams, made some cash off the action shots and learned a lot from shooting sports.

October 3, 2009 was a beautiful day - I was able to do something I love while two great families joined together to make one. My great friend Josette Myrick and I were able to capture Carole & Jason's wedding day at Bishop's Lodge in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is so easy to take a photograph when the people you are shooting are absolutely gorgeous and the couple is so madly in love.
